Description

Okudono Tentōyama Tomae (奥殿天砥山戸前) is a relatively hard Okudo natural finishing stone from the famous Umegahata mountain district of Kyoto, home to some of Japan's finest natural sharpening stones (Honzan Awasedo).

It belongs to the renowned Higashimono (Eastern Mines) geological formation, celebrated for producing some of the highest-quality natural whetstones in Japan alongside legendary mines such as Nakayama, Ozuku, Shoubudani, and Okudo.

Tomae (戸前) is the classic finishing layer of Japanese natural whetstones. It is prized for its exceptionally uniform structure, ultra-fine abrasive particles, consistent sharpening feel, and excellent ease of use.

Seller: Nakakatsu.

Yamamoto Selection Stamp

The 山本男系山主精選 (Yamamoto Dankei Yamanu-shu Seisen) stamp is especially valuable. It certifies that the stone was personally selected by the Yamamoto family, the historic male lineage of the Umegahata mine owners.

The kanji 奥殿 is sometimes incorrectly read as Okuden or Okudono. Among Japanese natural stone enthusiasts, however, the accepted pronunciation is Okudo.

This stone combines high hardness with excellent abrasive performance, making it an outstanding finishing stone.
