The founder of the company was Pete Kershaw, who in 1974 organized a production of cutlery and knives. Kershaw went through a comparatively difficult period as the international markets were flooded with cheap Chinese knockoffs. The decline in sales forced this firm to seek a way out of a difficult financial situation. And the way out was found - the company joined the transnational Japanese concern KAI Cutlery Group. The Japanese retained the Kershaw brand, transferring some of the production to Japan and China.

A historic event in the history of the development of Kershaw Knives happened when Ken Onion took over as the company's designer in the 1990s. His arrival greatly influenced the development of the brand, giving him a powerful impetus forward. Ken's design and tech innovations caught everyone's attention.
