These are natural Tomo Nagura stones from the famous Nakayama (中山) mine in Kyoto, Japan, intended primarily for raising a fine finishing slurry on Japanese natural finishing stones — Awasedo / JNAT.
Each Nagura is made from natural Nakayama stone. The reverse side retains the 中山 — Nakayama marking, indicating the stated origin of the stone.
What is Tomo Nagura?
Tomo Nagura (共名倉) is a small piece of fine natural whetstone used to rub the surface of a larger finishing stone in order to raise an abrasive slurry.
Unlike coarser Nagura stones used during earlier sharpening stages, Tomo Nagura is primarily intended for the final honing and polishing stages. It produces a very fine slurry while preserving the finishing characteristics of the base Awasedo.
Nakayama Tomo Nagura is particularly useful on hard, dense finishing stones that release their own slurry very slowly.
Sharpening Characteristics
These Nakayama stones have a fine, dense abrasive structure, approximately #10,000+, with a hardness of about 4/5.
When rubbed over the wet surface of the base stone, the Nagura quickly produces a fine natural slurry. This increases the cutting action of the finishing stone while maintaining excellent control during the honing process.
As honing progresses, the slurry can gradually be diluted with clean water, reducing its abrasive action and refining the finish. The final stage can be performed with a very dilute slurry and then directly on the clean surface of the base stone.
This is particularly useful for straight razors, where an exceptionally clean, smooth and finely refined cutting edge is required.
Recommended Base Stones
Nakayama Tomo Nagura can be used not only with Nakayama stones but also with other hard Kyoto JNATs, including Ozuku, Okudo / Okudono, Shobudani, Narutaki, Hideriyama, Shinden, and other fine Awasedo stones.
It is particularly useful with very dense finishing stones that produce little or no slurry when used with water alone.
Recommended for final honing of straight razors, Japanese kitchen knives, high-carbon steel knives, Japanese planes, chisels and other premium edged tools.

How to Use
Wet the surface of the main finishing stone with water and gently rub the Nakayama Tomo Nagura over it several times. The amount and consistency of the slurry can be controlled by adjusting the amount of water and the number of strokes.
For the finest possible finish, gradually dilute the slurry with clean water while reducing pressure. Final honing can then be completed directly on the clean surface of the base stone.
Nakayama Tomo Nagura is an excellent choice for hard Japanese Awasedo stones. It quickly raises a fine, controllable natural slurry and is particularly well suited for final honing of straight razors, high-carbon steel knives and Japanese woodworking tools.
