Description

This is a Shohonyama Shinden Awasedo natural finishing stone in razor size from Kyoto, Japan. The honing surface displays a beautiful warm honey-yellow color with subtle natural color variation and a remarkably uniform texture.

Shinden is one of the historic sharpening stone areas of Umegahata (Western Kyoto), where traditional Kyoto Nishimono natural whetstones were quarried. Mining ceased many years ago, making genuine Shinden stones increasingly scarce and highly desirable among users and collectors.

With its medium hardness, this stone is easy to use and highly versatile, making it suitable for kitchen knives, straight razors, woodworking tools, and other fine edged instruments.

Its structure is exceptionally consistent throughout the entire stone, allowing stable performance from the first use to the last millimeter of usable material.

For a natural finishing stone, it cuts relatively quickly while producing an exceptionally refined edge on carbon steels. The blade glides smoothly across the surface with a soft, creamy feel, leaving a refined satin finish rather than an overly reflective mirror polish.

During sharpening, the stone develops a rich, fine dark slurry that provides excellent feedback and a very smooth sharpening experience. Its balance of cutting speed, control, and finishing quality makes it an outstanding natural whetstone for regular use.

About Japanese Natural Stones

The grit rating of Japanese natural finishing stones is only an approximation. Their performance depends far more on abrasive particle shape, density, and fracture characteristics than on particle size alone.

A quality Awasedo produces the traditional Kasumi finish while creating an extremely refined, long-lasting cutting edge with excellent control and edge retention.

Once experienced, many sharpeners prefer to perform their final honing on natural Japanese stones rather than synthetic finishing stones.
