This is a Shōhonyama Okudo Shiro (White) Suita from Kyoto, intended for the final finishing of knives and traditional woodworking tools.
Often regarded as the "Holy Grail" of Japanese natural sharpening stones, Okudo Shiro Suita has become exceptionally rare and highly valuable because the Okudo mine has long been closed and the remaining stock has been largely exhausted. Okudo is widely known as the King of Suita.
Okudo is one of the legendary Five Higashi-mono (Eastern Mines), together with Nakayama, Shoubudani, Narutaki Mukai-da, and Ozuku. No other Suita stones can truly match Okudo for its combination of fineness, sharpening speed, and ease of use. It is also generally considered superior to the excellent Suita stones from the Shinden Mine.
The kanji 奥殿 is sometimes mistakenly read as Okuden or Okudono. Therefore, if you happen to have a Japanese friend who is familiar with natural sharpening stones, they may pronounce it using one of those names. You can politely let them know that the accepted reading is Okudo.
This stone has medium hardness with excellent abrasive performance, making it an outstanding finishing stone.
About the Stone
The usable sharpening surface on the front face is relatively narrow, as shown in the photographs. As the stone is periodically lapped during use, the working surface will gradually become wider.
The reverse side has also been professionally lapped and is fully usable. In fact, many users may find it performs as well as—or even better than—the front side.
The brown natural lines are non-toxic and cannot be felt during sharpening.
