Description

This is a premium Ozuku Asagi natural finishing stone from Kyoto, Japan, intended for the final honing and finishing of straight razors, high-quality knives, and traditional woodworking tools. It is particularly well suited for straight razors.

Ozuku Asagi stones are renowned for their exceptional hardness and extremely fine finishing ability. The fine slurry helps restore an exceptionally sharp cutting edge while producing a very clean, refined, and long-lasting finish.

This stone works exceptionally well with Nagura stones. By using a progression of Nagura stones of different grades, it is possible to perform almost the entire fine-sharpening and finishing sequence on a single Ozuku base stone.

It is especially recommended for traditional Japanese high-carbon steel knives and premium straight razors.

About the Stone

A very homogeneous, exceptionally hard, and beautiful Ozuku finisher.

The stone displays a superb Asagi coloration. The entire sharpening surface features an attractive mottled pattern combining ivory, light-gray, and gray tones, while maintaining a remarkably uniform structure and providing very stable and predictable sharpening feedback.

An exceptionally clean stone: free from harmful inclusions, problematic lines, and cracks.

Its high density and extremely fine finishing characteristics make this Ozuku Asagi an outstanding super-finisher for straight razors.

About Japanese Natural Finishing Stones

The grit rating of Japanese natural finishing stones is only an approximation and cannot be directly compared with the grit ratings of synthetic abrasives. A fine natural stone such as this can produce an exceptionally refined and clean finish and, when used on laminated Japanese blades, the highly desirable Kasumi appearance.

The performance of Japanese natural stones depends not only on abrasive particle size, but also on the shape, distribution, and behavior of the natural abrasive particles within the slurry. This allows them to remove very small amounts of steel while developing an exceptionally fine and sharp cutting edge.

Unlike synthetic stones with relatively uniform abrasive particles, natural stones contain abrasives of varying sizes and shapes. This contributes to a more complex microscopic edge structure and is one of the reasons for the distinctive sharpening feedback and cutting characteristics associated with Japanese natural stones.

It is this combination of exceptional sharpness, refined finishing ability, precise control, and unique feedback that has made Japanese natural whetstones so highly valued by professional sharpeners, straight-razor enthusiasts, and collectors.
