Description

Although the sharpening surface displays a color more commonly associated with Kiita stones, traces of the characteristic Asagi coloration can be seen on the sides of the stone, and it has therefore been classified as an Asagi. This stone is believed to have originated from the long-term inventory of one of our knife manufacturing partners and was likely distributed during the 1970s to 1980s.

Despite its relatively hard nature, it offers excellent cutting performance and good swarf release, consistently producing a rich, dark black slurry during use.

The slurry is extremely fine and easy to control, allowing for precise and delicate edge refinement without roughening the edge. The use of nagura stones is recommended to further enhance its performance.

It is particularly well suited for the final finishing of razors and traditional woodworking tools such as planes and chisels, where consistency, edge clarity, and precise control are essential. It also performs exceptionally well on high-quality kitchen knives when a sharp, clean, and refined edge is desired.

Offering a quiet, smooth, and composed sharpening experience, this is a highly capable finishing stone recommended for experienced users who value control, stability, and refined finishing performance.

The Nakayama Quarry, located on the eastern side of Mount Atago, is part of the East Higashi Mono Quarry.

The Nakayama stones were the property of the Imperial Household for their high quality and were used to polish swords. These stones have never appeared on the market since the Kamakura period 1185-1333. And until the middle of the Muromachi era 1336-1573.

Nakayama stones are the most famous and celebrated of all Japanese natural decorative stones.
