The Army Aircrew Combat Uniform (A2CU) is a uniform for the United States Army Air Force that enhances crew comfort and provides fire protection during pre-flight preparation, refueling, in-flight and other aviation operations.
For the A2CU form, Nomex fabric is used, which contains 92% Nomex meta-aramid fibers, 5% Kevlar and 3% P-140 antistatic fiber.
Nomex fabric has low thermal conductivity, providing protection against burns of the II and III degrees, stable antistatic properties and ergonomics. The flame-retardant and heat-resistant properties of the fabric, embedded at the molecular level, are constant and remain throughout the entire service life.
In addition, Nomex has the property of self-extinguishing, it does not burn, does not smoke, does not melt and does not form smudges, it tolerates washing and dry cleaning very well.
Kevlar, which is part of the fabric, improves the tear resistance of the material in case of sudden bursts of flame and at the same time increases the level of human protection. Under the influence of heat, the pores of the tissue close, which reduces the penetration of hot air inside.
When exposed to heat for a long time, the fabric thickens and forms a hard charred surface that continues to provide optimal thermal insulation to the body.
