This is a natural Shiki Tomae Asagi whetstone from the Wakasa region of Fukui Prefecture, Japan.
Wakasa stones are known as a traditional natural whetstone source located near Kyoto and were known to produce geological layers similar to those found in Kyoto, including Tomae, Suita, and Asagi. This particular stone is an Asagi from the Shiki Tomae layer and is suitable for finishing a wide range of edged tools, including kitchen knives, planes, chisels, and straight razors.
Despite its dense structure, this stone continuously produces a fine, dark-colored slurry during sharpening. It offers sufficient cutting power while maintaining a stable and consistent finish, allowing the edge to be refined efficiently. When used together with a Mikawa nagura or similar conditioning stone, it is also capable of producing a beautiful kasumi finish, bringing out a natural contrast between the softer jigane and harder hagane steel.
Wakasa stones are generally known for their hardness and fine abrasive particles, and this stone displays those characteristics well. As a result, it is a highly practical finishing stone suitable not only for kitchen knives but also for woodworking tools and straight razors.
A crack that may eventually develop into a larger fracture is visible along the side of the stone. As a precaution, the stone has been sealed more heavily than usual to help stabilize the area. At present, this does not present a significant issue in practical use; however, strong impacts and rapid drying should be avoided.
Today, genuine Wakasa natural stones are becoming increasingly difficult to obtain, and opportunities to acquire high-quality examples from the Tomae layer are becoming more limited each year. This stone is appealing not only as a practical sharpening tool but also as a collectible example of the traditional Wakasa whetstone heritage.
