Description

This is a premium Nakayama Kiita Awasedo finishing stone from Kyoto, designed especially for straight razors.

Black namazu lines are visible on the sharpening surface. All of these are kesuji (non-toxic, harmless natural lines) and do not scratch or interfere with sharpening. This stone is believed to come from the long-term stock of one of our Japanese knife-making partners and was most likely distributed during the 1970s–1980s.

Despite its relatively hard composition, it delivers excellent cutting performance and efficient swarf removal, consistently producing a rich, dark-black slurry during use.

The slurry is extremely fine and easy to control, allowing precise, delicate edge refinement without leaving a coarse finish. For even better performance, the use of Nagura stones is highly recommended.

It is particularly well suited for the final finishing of straight razors and traditional woodworking tools such as hand planes and chisels, where edge stability, cleanliness, and precise control are essential. It is also an excellent choice for high-end kitchen knives when an exceptionally sharp, clean, and refined edge is desired.

This high-performance natural sharpening stone provides a smooth, quiet, and comfortable sharpening experience and is recommended for experienced users who appreciate precision, consistency, and the highest quality finishing results.

Historical Background

The Nakayama mine was established approximately 800 years ago.

Located on the eastern side of Mount Atago, Nakayama is part of the Higashi Mono (Eastern Mine) district.

Because of their exceptional quality, Nakayama stones were once the property of the Imperial Court and were reserved for polishing Japanese swords. They were not available on the open market from the Kamakura period (1185–1333) through the middle of the Muromachi period (1336–1573).

Nakayama stones are regarded as the most famous and highly esteemed of all Japanese natural finishing stones.
