Japanese Yasugi Steel Kamisori with Mukainochi Asagi Natural Whetstone & Shōhonzan

A rare traditional Japanese shaving and honing set consisting of a Yasugi carbon-steel Japanese kamisori, a natural Mukainochi Asagi finishing stone, natural Shōhonzan whetstone powder, and the original paulownia wood box. The razor handle retains its traditional rattan wrapping.

Yasugi Steel Kamisori

The razor is made from high-quality Yasugi carbon steel, produced in the Yasugi region, historically renowned for high-grade steels used for Japanese cutting tools.

Yasugi steel is highly regarded for its ability to take an exceptionally keen edge, its excellent response to Japanese natural whetstones, and its relatively straightforward sharpening characteristics.

The razor has already been honed to shaving condition. Final honing was performed using a Japanese natural whetstone followed by stropping on a cordovan leather strop. It can be used in its present condition or further refined according to personal preference.

The razor has been disinfected with 75% alcohol.

It is in very good condition: the mirror finish is well preserved, the geometry is even, and there is no active rust. The original rattan handle wrapping and original box are present. The edge has been honed to easily pass a hanging-hair cutting test and is ready for use.

Mukainochi Asagi Natural Whetstone

The set includes a Japanese natural finishing stone marked:

向ノ地 浅葱 — Mukainochi Asagi

向ノ地 — Mukainochi — the stone's place of origin.
浅葱 — Asagi — a traditional Japanese natural whetstone color designation.

The stone has a very light creamy-yellow appearance. It is relatively hard while remaining comfortable to use and is particularly suitable for fine razor honing.

Dimensions: approximately 138 × 78 × 7 mm.

At approximately 7 mm thick, this is essentially a JNAT razor-size laser. Mounting it on a wooden or other rigid base is recommended for easier and safer long-term use.

Its shape is particularly convenient for honing traditional Japanese kamisori. Mukainochi stones are valued for razor finishing because of their clean, controlled, and delicate honing characteristics.

Yamamoto Selection Stamp

The stone bears the stamp:

山本男系山主精選

This marking indicates selection by the Yamamoto family, historically associated with whetstone mine ownership and quarrying in the Umegahata area.

Stones bearing this selection stamp are particularly interesting to collectors because the marking indicates that the individual stone was specifically selected.

Natural Shōhonzan Whetstone Powder

The set also includes an original container of:

砥粉（正本山）— Tonoko / Shōhonzan whetstone powder

This powder is produced from Japanese natural whetstone material. During honing, an appropriate amount can be mixed with water on the whetstone surface to quickly create a useful abrasive slurry.

It is not a modern synthetic abrasive, but natural Honzan whetstone powder intended for slurry preparation and fine polishing.

The presence of the original powder container is an additional advantage for collectors and helps preserve the completeness of the original set.
