Use with hard Awasedo

One of the most useful applications of Iyo Nagura is with hard and very hard Japanese finishing stones, or Awasedo, which may release very little slurry on their own.

When rubbed over the surface of an Awasedo, Iyo Nagura quickly produces an initial abrasive slurry while also helping release abrasive particles from the surface of the base stone itself. This creates a working mixture containing particles from both the Iyo Nagura and the Awasedo, noticeably increasing the cutting and polishing speed of a hard finishing stone.

During sharpening, the slurry can be gradually diluted with water. For the finest final finish, the remaining slurry can be rinsed away and the last strokes performed directly on the clean Awasedo with water.

Advantages of Iyo Nagura:

  • quickly produces a useful abrasive slurry;
  • particularly useful with hard Awasedo;
  • helps open and activate the surface of hard finishing stones;
  • increases the cutting speed of slow, hard finishers;
  • allows a gradual progression from faster slurry work to a very fine finish on the clean stone;
  • suitable for knives, woodworking tools and straight razors.

Iyo Nagura can generally be regarded as a medium-fine natural abrasive. Assigning it an exact synthetic grit rating such as #3000 or #6000 is not entirely accurate, since the behavior of a natural stone depends on pressure, water, surface condition and the Awasedo with which it is used.

Important: Iyo Nagura is more than simply a small standalone sharpening stone. When paired with a hard Awasedo, its main value is its ability to quickly generate slurry and increase the activity of the main finishing stone.
