This is a large Mikawa Chu Nagura stone, traditionally used for sword polishing. Although referred to as "Chu Nagura" for convenience, it is actually mined from the Botan deposit. Similar to the Asano Nagura, the brown variety tends to be slightly harder than the pure white specimens, with a correspondingly finer effective grit.
Despite its high density, the stone exhibits strong cutting ability and quickly forms a dark slurry, resulting in a very smooth and comfortable sharpening feel. The felt grit is slightly finer than a typical Botan Nagura. Please note that these stones are not for beginners as they are more difficult to use. These are natural stones, which means that each one is different, so my measured sizes are not accurate. This is a lifetime investment for people who make a living sharpening their knives and tools, feel free to ask me any questions you may have.
