This stone comes from the Tomae layer at the Aiwatani mine. It is a high quality finishing stone in generally clean condition. The stone was mined in the 1960s and the previous owner had it attached to a board for successful use.
A test sharpening revealed a dense, rich black slurry with excellent color development. Despite its hardness, it can be used without a sharpener without any problems and the chip separation is very good, indicating a high cutting ability combined with ease of use.
Aiwatani stones typically range in grit from #6000 to #8000 and this particular product is closer to the finer end of that range, close to the #8000 zone.
It is extremely well suited for finishing kitchen knives and woodworking tools and also serves as an excellent pre-finishing (very close to finishing) of razors. A very versatile and well-balanced stone.
