The history of the Takashima whetstone is about 200 years old. It departs from Takashima Harbor for Otsu. It is very similar in appearance and quality to Nakayama, so it was used by the craftsmen who sharpened knives in Sakai. Most Takashima whetstones are slightly softer than when compared to fine grain hard natural whetstones from Kyoto such as Nakayama or Ozuku, but in my experience Takashima is a very sharp stone, works great on all knife steels and can even be a sufficient finish on knives. ... For a razor, of course, this is just the pre-finish. It is also an excellent whetstone for removing scratches on the blade after being treated with a medium-grit whetstone, because Takashima contains very few unwanted particles in its structure. Takashima is one of the best natural whetstones that a newbie in the field of natural whetstones can find useful; nevertheless, Takashima is an excellent whetstone for the connoisseur because it has a lot of variety.

The grain size of Japanese lapping stones is quite relative, in any case it is thinner than synthetic stone # 8000. This will give the famous Kasumi coating (cloudy) and prolong the life of the blade. Finishing sharpening is done on natural stones, and a smooth, sharp cutting edge is obtained. Japanese natural stones have such properties, because the quality is influenced not by the size of the abrasive particles, but by the shape. This is confirmed by a study by the University of Tokyo. SiO2 abrasive particles are in the form of rounded flakes. They do not abrade, but remove steel like sod, especially on suspension. Thus, not enough steel is removed, but the steel is also removed in such a way that a jagged edge is not formed, which would be when sharpening on artificial stones.

The work of natural stones is fundamentally different from the work of synthetic ones. Therefore, stones with supposedly the same grain size will give completely different results. Synthetic stones give a narrow but deep footprint, while natural stones are wide but shallow. The thinner the natural stone, the less deep it leaves a trace, but the width of this trace remains almost unchanged. Those. the grain has the shape of a pancake and the main indicator of the fineness of the work is not the size of this pancake, but its thickness. Therefore, it is impossible to draw an analogy between the grain size of natural and synthetic stones.

Also, a natural stone sharpening has a hardening effect on the edge of the blade. This has been scientifically proven by the HRC testing machine, an experiment carried out by the renowned blacksmith Usui Kengo. In fact, the hardness was higher after polishing with a thin natural stone. As you can see, the point is not only in the achieved sharpness of natural stones. After you use natural stones, you will not want to switch to artificial ones.
